Black bib, white print.
Words from a supportive daughter, Cheryce Thompson:
On June 12th, after 40+ years of never being sick, this superhero, my father, was rushed to the hospital unexpectedly. A couple days later, he had emergency surgery that removed a sizable mass in his colon that turned out to be cancerous. The surgery also included a colostomy. Thankfully it was all removed and there was no further spreading or damage. Needless to say, this was an ordeal that we weren’t prepared for. It was a shocking blow that we weren’t ready for physically, mentally,&most of all financially.
The Medicare plan that my father has covers only hospitalization, home care, or rehab/nursing home. It doesn’t cover doctor’s visits or medications. Open enrollment will be available in October for him to take advantage of plans B&D which cover those things, but in addition to whatever the monthly payment would be, my father would also be responsible for paying 12 years worth of penalties for not signing up for those plans at the time he got the standard Medicare plan A. It isn’t mandatory, but my parents weren’t clear on the need to still enroll nor the penalties that he could suffer later. And, although on a fixed income, he doesn’t qualify for Medicaid. So, all of his follow-up visits&medications have been paid for out of pocket. Plus, he has bills from each of the doctors that he saw while in the hospital. In December, he will be hospitalized again to reverse the colostomy and will need further follow-up visits&further medication.
My brother established this go fund me and my pride almost didn’t allow me to post. But this need is deeper than my pride. My parents need your help. If you can find it in your heart to donate, no amount is too small! Dollars add up!! If you can’t donate, please spread the word! And please, please assist your elderly family members in planning for their medical future. Make sure that questions are asked and information is understood! Also, listen to your bodies. Go to the doctor when you feel that something isn’t right. At 50, get a colonoscopy. Consult with your doctor to find out how often it needs to be done!! #ColonCancerIsPreventable
